Roofing in East Lansing, MI

East Lansing at a glance

East Lansing sits immediately east of Lansing in Ingham and Clinton counties and is home to Michigan State University, one of the largest public universities in the country. The city's population is about 49,000.

What that means for your roof

A college town has a lot of rental houses, many of them older homes near campus. Landlords juggling several properties benefit from yearly roof inspections and quick repairs before small problems reach tenants' ceilings; see roof repair.

Mature trees

Established neighborhoods have big shade trees. Branches over the roof drop leaves into gutters and can break off in storms, so keep limbs trimmed back.

The plank road and the college

Long before the university, this ground was a junction for Potawatomi and Fox peoples. In 1850 a company formed to build the Lansing and Howell Plank Road, a toll road with seven toll houses that ran right through what is now East Lansing and opened in 1853. Michigan State was founded in 1855 and moved here in 1857, and the city grew up around it. Many homes near campus are old enough to have had several roofs, sometimes layered on top of each other, so a tear-off during replacement lets the roofer check the deck underneath.
