Haslett is named for James and Sarah Haslett, who founded the Nemoka Spiritualist Camp on the shore of Pine Lake, the original name for Lake Lansing. The first camp opened in 1882, and by the late 1800s thousands of people came each summer for meetings, lectures and séances. Mr. Haslett hoped to make it the movement's national headquarters before his death in 1891.
