Roofing in Mason, MI

Mason at a glance

Mason is the county seat of Ingham County, about 12 miles south of Lansing, with 8,283 people at the 2020 census. It's named for Stevens T. Mason, Michigan's first governor.

What that means for your roof

Mason's historic center has older homes and brick buildings with chimneys, built-in gutters and steep slopes, while newer neighborhoods ring the town. Older houses often benefit most from better attic insulation and ventilation; see ice dams.

Open farmland

Farmland around Mason leaves many homes open to wind from every direction. Check for lifted shingles after strong storms.

The capital that wasn't

In 1836 Charles Noble bought forest land, cleared 20 acres and founded Mason Center, expecting the new state would choose a central spot for its capital. In 1847 the legislature picked Lansing Township, 12 miles north, for its water power instead. Noble managed to make Mason the county seat, and the first courthouse went up in 1843, replaced in 1858. Older homes near the courthouse square have seen many winters and often more than one roof, so a careful replacement with a tear-off is usually the right choice when the time comes.
